Also in this final session people can try their hand at basket weaving from the UK and Slovakian lace making.

This event is open to adults and children alike, of all ages and abilities. The activities and materials are all free and you don’t have to book – just drop in for as long as you like. Children under 8 must be accompanied by an adult throughout.

Saturday Arts Club, Common Ground, Empire Road

In sessions between January and March, children will learn about different arts and crafts from around the world to link with the 2012 Olympic teams training in Sheffield this year. Children may even get the chance to watch Olympic divers train at Ponds Forge. The sessions will include international crafts such as Indian block printing, Brazilian tribal head-dresses and the local art of basketry using materials from Sheffield Heritage Museum. If any community members or groups would be interested in giving a short talk about an art form from their culture, or to enquire about spaces for children, please contact Cassie on 0114 268 6813 or email cassie@artinthepark.org.uk.

Wise Words

An intergenerational creative writing project based in two schools in Nether Edge. There will be fifteen sessions altogether, run as afterschool clubs and led by a professional writer. The focus will be on writing about living in the area and how things have changed over time. Two sessions will see children interviewing local older people to find out about the past. Participants will be rewarded by seeing their work in print in a small publication. If any older people or groups in the area would like to get involved, please contact Cassie on 0114 268 6813 or cassie@artinthepark.org.uk

Sheffield Children’s Festival

A Bigger Bloom

This year we are creating 300 blooming flowers that will be housed in the Botanical Gardens. Inspired by David Hockney's recent masterpiece ‘Bigger Trees near Warter’, this project will produce a 3D mural bursting with bright colours and interesting textures. We will be working with 7 schools across the city between March and June ending in the exhibition opening Monday 18th June showing until the 3rd September. There will be a public workshop on Saturday 14th July 11-3pm where you can make your own flower for free! To book on email admin@artinthepark.org.uk 01142686813

February Half Term

This half term we are working all over Sheffield delivering environmental arts activities to children aged 8-11 years. We will be visiting Concord Park and Wooley Woods, Monteney Primary, Hinde House, and Hucklow Primary. Activities will include bushcraft, land art and 3D installations inspired by the natural world. This project is in partnership with Children’s University and Eventus

Parson’s Cross Library

We will be delivering textiles skills, jewellery making and mosaic activities for young people in Parson’s Cross throughout February and March.

Return to Firth Park Children’s Centre

This half term we will be venturing back to Firth Park Children’s Centre allotment, where we previously delivered arts activities to local families- bringing colour and vibrancy to the allotment. We are heading back there this February to re build the ageing den- creating the structure with local volunteers and decorating it with the families attending the play session. A new safe haven for relaxing will be created for the allotment for those hard days of graft.

Shakespeare’s Sonnets

Working in partnership with Cathy Shrank at The University of Sheffield we will be delivering 3 workshops between March and June with older people, people with mental health issues and 16- 25 year olds out of education and training.

We will explore sonnets selected for their strong evocation of visual images (e.g. ageing, landscapes, nature) then participants will have access to various media (e.g. painting, textiles, digital cameras) to develop artwork which responds to images evoked in Shakespeare’s sonnets. Then the participants will respond to both Shakespeare’s sonnets and the visual images they and their peers have produced through their own creative writing. The images and writing will be curated as a public exhibition, opened with readings of written work produced. The process – from words being explored (phase 1), through the creation of visual images (phase 2), to the rewriting of words (phase 3) – will be filmed and edited into a short film, playing at exhibition opening Friday 8th June from 7pm at the Jessop Wing exhibition space.

Sharing Our Lives Celebration

This event will be the culmination of six months of intergenerational work in Sheffield Homes Sheltered Housing Schemes. The project has worked with 37 residents across four schemes and 46 children from local school have visited to do creative writing together about their lives. A book has been created of the project and will be distributed at the celebration event in Sharrow on Tuesday 28th February 1.30-2.30pm

Wild Things Celebration Phase

This project has involved environmental and creative workshops in five parks across S6 since May 2011. We are currently designing some new signage for the parks using the images created at events and planning two artswalks to take place in the area this spring. We are also hoping to have a small exhibition to celebrate the project and thank everyone involved.

Villages of Poetry Part 2!

We have recently received further funding from EPIP Leader grants to develop our year long project in the East Peak. We will be delivering adult art and poetry classes between March 2012 and February 2013 in Penistone, Denby Dale and North Sheffield, developing volunteer teams to run large celebration events and provide the tools for the groups to continue once the project has ended. We will be using our poetry trails installed in the last project and the local environment as inspiration to raise the profile of the areas and provide new opportunities for the local communities.

somewhereto_

Art in the Park have recently become one of Yorkshire and Humberside Regional Coordinators for a nationwide project called somewhereto_ working alongside Chol Theatre and Proper Job Theatre Company. Inspired by the London 2012 Olympic & Paralympic Games, somewhereto_ is a nationwide project to help young people find the space they need to do the things they love, within sport, culture and the arts.

Basically we want to….

To help young people find somewhereto_ do what they love, and encourage everyone in the community to use their space more creatively. The result? The opening up of much-needed resources, lots of happy young people, thousands of inspiring success stories, and a lasting sporting and cultural legacy

Do you have a space?

Are you a space-holder? Or able to access space? somewhereto_ wants to hear from you. All space is welcome – brand new, in use, busy, empty, or derelict, as well as physical or virtual. Your space could be a hall or a warehouse. Or perhaps something less obvious, like space on air or online. As long as it’s safe and available, we’re interested.

Are you a young person or have links to young people?

We are looking for young adults aged 16-25 years old who are looking to find space. Do you know a break dancing group meeting in their parent’s garage, a young poet who doesn’t know how to get their work out there, a group of artists wanting to exhibit? Whatever the activity or passion we can support them to find their ideal space to realise their passion.

Do you have an event we could attend?

As part of the project we can attend events, provide creative activities and publicise the event to get 16-25 years old engaging with us, the space and your organisation. There would be no charge for us attending and we can provide extra activities, publicity and enthusiasm!

For more information go to www.somewhereto.com.

somewhereto_ is run by Livity, a social enterprise, in media partnership with Channel 4 Education. The project is funded by Legacy Trust UK, an independent charity set up to help build a lasting cultural and sporting legacy from the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games across the UK.
