August 7th Philadelphia
In a departure from the norm we decided not to take a summer break this year, and August saw us returning to the site of several previous Art in the Park events, Philadelphia in Upperthorpe.
This was my first experience of volunteering with Art in the Park. The theme was printmaking. We used leaves, twigs and other found objects as inspiration. We began to draw interesting shapes, which were then cut into lino. We experimented with colour, size and form. Often we found that the more simple shapes were the most effective for making prints. A few others and myself made a sketch of the surrounding landscape. This then became a poster size canvas, which everyone could print on. This was a great way of getting everyone involved.
I found the group to be friendly, enthusiastic and relaxed. The location was interesting, a large space on a hill with some woodland. As soon as we set up, families, children, young people and many adults came to join in. It was fantastic to see such an interesting mix of people of all ages getting on and helping each other. It was a great day and I’m excited about getting more involved with the project!
