Art in the Park - August Event - Circus at Langsett Greenspace
What a busy month for volunteers! Four events in four weeks brought us face to face with circus skills, costume, head-gear and the Great British Summertime.
Despite the elements, Art in the Park clustered together many of these vibrant activities to produce a truly eclectic mix of events. I think all would agree that no one day was alike. The first session saw a great deal of enthusiasm for dressing up as 'Victorian ladies' and a rather spectacular Ringmaster. One mother who had travelled quite a distance to the event commented that it was nice to have a change from the usual sporting activities for the boys. Looking around, the satisfied grins from all those mastering diabolo under the tutorial of Dave - our 'circusmaster' - certainly paid testimony to that.
Over the course of the second and third weeks - joined by the Burton Street Project - skills in juggling, balloon-model making and especially 'poi' were developed giving the people there a chance to engage creatively with designing and making their own equipment as well as appreciating perhaps how challenging a circus performance can be. We gave our own a go at the Langsett Funday in the final week with some fantastic attempts on the unicycle - the holy grail of our circus skills development over the four weeks - and stunning home-made poi.
Great stuff! We discovered skills we never knew we had and helped everyone have a taster of the fun of the fair.
