Beacons Project, Ruskin Park, October 2007
The Beacons project was a collaboration between Art in the Park and other partners to produce two simultaneous events on hilltops across the Don Valley in Sheffield.
We also ran two preperation events on Saturdays so that local people could come along and work with our artist Cassie Limb to produce some UV creations to display at our event.
The first preparation event was held on the 13th of October in Ruskin Park. Despite the drizzle and rather overcast skies the vibrant UV materials lit up the park, even in day light, and brought a smile to the faces of those who got involved in making some wonderful sand art, small spinny beacons made of UV card and some giant plywood beacons that would be illuminated by UV lights at the evening event.
At the second event on the morning of the 20th of October, we returned to Ruskin park for an early start and many participants braved the cold, clear, crisp weather to once again make wonderful UV artwork for the main event in the evening guided by the ideas and creativity of Cassie.
During the afternoon a small team of volunteers transformed the park, digging holes, rigging up generators, roping off a performance space and dangling lights from trees so that as night fell the park was transformed into a magical UV-scape with a fire performance and face painter to boot.
At the appointed time we looked over the valley to Parkwood Springs and saw a single firework set off, the signal for our firework to be launched. They saw ours and lit the 30ft flaming pheonix lighting up their hillside.
As night continued to fall the UV sculptures really came into their own and the bright spinny beacons we had created were used to flash a signal across the park and across the valley.
A super evening that could well become an annual event on two hill-tops and who knows, maybe some of the other seven hills of Sheffield will join in next time?
