Philadelphia, February 2007, Trail Through the Trees
I’ve lived in Sheffield all of my life, yet participating in the “Trail through the Trees” event made me see my home town in such a different light. The event itself involved so many activities ranging from making sculptures of the Sheffield landscape (of which we had such a brilliant view) to giving the woodland trees a makeover by forming a colourful array of leaves from ironed plastic bags, which were then customised by participants who wrote or even drew comments about the day.
For me, however, what seemed to bring the whole event together was the long chain of brightly coloured pieces of plastic bags which weaved in and out of all the different activities; as the title of the event suggests, this literally was a “trail through the trees”. Given that the central theme of the event was to create art with natural or recycled resources, it was great to see how plastic bottles, light bulbs and even bike chains could made into art, as the art that I’m used to making usually involves just painting and drawing but not much more!
As a newly recruited volunteer for Art in the Park, this event was my first, and although initially it was quite daunting, it was great to meet so many different types of people with so many different ways of interpreting art through natural and recycled resources. For instance, the most memorable character was a woman who had brought along hand bags and head bands which had been made from recycled old tights and umbrellas...it just goes to show that with a little bit of thought and creativity, rubbish doesn’t really have to be thrown out!
by Titi Lucas, Art in the Park volunteer
Participants were invited to write or draw comments on leaves made from recycled plastic bags. These were then hung on trees. Here are some of the comments written:
Sunny quiet peaceful
I’m really pleased the weather is so good today…it seems warm for this time of year…I like the different landscapes in this area…trees, grass, seeds…
I love it here!
I was thinking about Art in the Park this morning.
We had a great time at Art in the Park.
To see the world in a grain of sand, and heaven in a wild flower
Great to see the environment
Love collecting deadwood and using it!
I enjoy making and playing outside
