Get Fired Up About Philadelphia,
Jurassic Park: Monday 6th August 2007

The first event of this year’s summer project – Get Fired up about Philadelphia- gave children and adults alike a great opportunity to get really stuck in to some art and clay projects!

The weather was lovely – sunny and hot all day – which meant that lots of people were out in the park anyway and could get involved.
We had the chance to explore the whole space of Philadelphia (which was much bigger than I imagined) to look for homes for the dinosaurs. We also thought about what sort of dinosaur would live where – would a sleepy dinosaur live under some leaves? Would a scary dinosaur live by some rocks?

Artist Natasha Light was then on hand to help with the clay. Everyone got creative and a whole host of different dinosaurs were thought up and made from big lumps of clay. I really enjoy working with clay, and so did everyone else it seemed. It’s always good fun to get your hands a bit messy! There was also a chance to paint some of the dinosaurs that had already been made by the artists with glaze.

And then came the exciting bit – firing the glazed dinosaurs in the on site raku kiln! It may have looked a bit like an ordinary bin, but the kiln was where the chemical reactions happen to make the clay hard and to turn the glaze into a rainbow of colours. The kiln gets so hot we had to stand back and watch as Krishna and his helpers put the dinosaurs in with special tongs. After being fired for about ten minutes, the dinosaurs were then put in reduction chambers and then water to cool down. It was then that they could be handled and you could see what colours the dinosaur had become.

The whole day was a really enjoyable event. Lots of people got to take home dinosaurs as well as photos of them happy in their new homes in Philadelphia.

Wednesday 15th August: Making Tracks

The rain stopped and the clouds parted and a hardy band of folk arrived at the park for more dinosaur based fun and explorations of the park.

Small groups headed off into the trees to find small structures and create weavings with found materials, representing different aspects of the park; things above us, things below us, colours, views and so on. This led to interesting discussions about what the park's used for and how we can help to make it a better and safer place in the future.

Natasha joined us again with her wonderful clay activities, this time making dinosaur footprints by squashing, stretching, pressing moulding and shaping the clay. These tiles will be fired and set into the park as a permanent feature for people to enjoy and future paleontologists to puzzle over.

There was also some great circus skills being taught, learnt and practiced with diabolo, poi and juggling balls all being used to create whirling swirls of colour throughout our bit of the park.
