Art in the Dark, Sunday 14th January
The park at night,
Oh, what a delight,
To see the bushes all alight
With flowers that glow,
With fire poi that spark
To experience the park
Once it has turned dark!
Art in the Dark took place at Weston Park on a bright, clear January day. From the moment we set up the gazebo, there was lots of interest from people as to what we were doing and throughout the day about a hundred people enjoyed creating spectacular flower sculptures. Some came especially whilst others joined in after coming across us by chance as they walked through the park or were visiting Weston Park Museum. There was an exciting atmosphere and a real buzz with so many people joining in.
Flowers and other creations such as birds and flags were formed and decorated using many different materials- foam, tissue paper, ribbon, withy, foil, pipe cleaners, cups- and lit up with LEDs and glow sticks. Flowers were made in all shapes, colours, styles and sizes- everyone had different ideas and the people that made them were just as diverse! Children, students, families, young adults, older people, people who came on their own, groups of friends who came together, teenagers and tots- everyone could get involved!
As the winter sun disappeared and dusk arrived, the finished flowers began to glow and twinkle in the darkness. All the flowers and artwork were planted in the bushes to create a beautiful backdrop to the fire spinning finale. After everyone had gathered together in anticipation and admired the sight of the illuminated sculptures, the crowd quietened and in awed silence enjoyed the sight of Dave’s fire spinning performance. A perfect ending to a brilliant day where everyone came together to enjoy the park and creating!

Art in the Dark was lovely. I really enjoyed it. Everyone joined in and there were more participants than at any other Art in the Park I have been to. It was great that we could make a performance out of everyone’s work at the end. It was really bright, colourful and dynamic. It was very rewarding that so many people stayed to see what we had created. We should do that more!
