Work Experience

We have regular volunteer or paid internships here at Art in the Park. This is a great way to gain a range of skill and knowledge about how the arts sector works.

Case Studies

Sometimes we are able to access funds to pay our interns. Most recently we have received funding through Sheffield University and Vodaphone World of Difference. Here is one of our paid intern's account of her experience.

Kate Holden – Student Intern

I initially found out about Art in the Park through the University of Sheffield’s Internship Scheme which helps students gain the necessary skills and experience in the work place.

My role at Art in the Park was to help design and plan locations for a series of signs, producing a nature and heritage trail across Philadelphia Gardens in the Upperthorpe area of Sheffield as part of Art in the Park’s Big Lottery funded ‘Wild Things’ project. The role also included designing and helping facilitate a public arts walk through various parks within the area.

Art in the Park really gave me the freedom to develop the project as I saw fit, developing my self-direction and assertiveness through responsibility for the project. I really enjoyed being able to think creatively with the artist to develop the aesthetics of the signs. It was also very rewarding being able to follow through the project from initial research to installation of the signs within the park.

The passion of the Art in the Park team maintained a very motivating environment, providing support and encouragement whilst giving me the freedom to develop my skills in project management. Everyone was so friendly and welcoming and immediately made me feel part of the team and I was inspired by their enthusiasm to encourage and celebrate art in the community.

I have come out of the internship feeling more assertive and confident about applying for graduate positions in the near future on finishing my degree.
