Ruskin Park Fun Day, June 23rd 2007
Whilst some elements of the Funday ran into difficulties, Art in the Park’s activities went down a storm! Due to recent heavy rainfall, the stage (which came on a lorry) got stuck in the mud, and had to be rescued by the fire brigade. Unfortunately, this meant that only one band could play. Nevertheless, great fun was had by all, with the weather on the day actually rather sunny.
We painted on easels, and dried the pictures in the trees, which made a lovely exhibition for passers-by. The circus activities were popular as I hear they always are, with plate-spinning, poi and juggling adding to the festival spirit.
Our Summer Project this year – Get Fired Up About Philadelphia – will focus on clay. Ruskin Park Funday was a great opportunity to explore this material. We used air-drying clay and a kind of coloured clay called Modair to make models of people, cars, animals and monsters. The sculptures were put into a diorama we made, based on South Road in Walkley. Some people used cardboard boxes to make a range of buildings, including an Everything Shop and a giant washing machine!
Overall, the day was a great success, with loads of exciting ideas and laughter throughout. It was my first event as the Art in the Park Project Support Worker, and it was so inspiring to see the creativity and team spirit of the volunteers and public in action.
