(This is an inaccurate title because it was bucketing it down with rain so we ended up taking shelter in St Barts church hall and making lanterns indoors instead.)
We were given the project of making a giant dove lantern for the lantern festival in Sharrow by Matt Trevellyan, the artist who led the workshop that day.
Using willow withies and tissue paper we laboured all afternoon and the activity proved to be quite addictive with a number of participants and volunteers going to follow up workshops over the next few days in order to make more, bigger, better lanterns with which to take over the world. We also made a variety of smaller lanterns in various beautiful shapes and colours to be carried on sticks as part of the festival.
The dove which we began at the Art in the Park workshop was mounted on a big tree and provided the finale of the festival and everyone agreed that it was a beautiful piece of sculpture.
