Insects and Creepy Crawlies! Part One @ Blake Street Nature Park

The weather was definitely on our side when volunteers and local residents gathered in Blake Street Nature Park on Sunday 11th March for part one of Art in the Park’s insect and creepy crawly events. The event had a wonderful community spirit and seemed particularly popular among families with smaller children. It was incredibly rewarding to witness the results produced by those so young. The hilltop location provided beautiful views across the park and local area, and for additional inspiration, participants were also given the opportunity to explore local bug life with insect expert Peter Clegg.

The results were withy-framed ants, butterflies, dragonflies, a giant caterpillar and huge fuzzy bumble bee as well as a selection of weird and wonderful bottle bugs. The spider umbrellas were particularly popular due to the easy yet effective design which could be customised with bulging eyes and hanging webs. Many of the sculptures were inspired by artist Moira Benoit’s innovative designs, but there were plenty of original ones which took full advantage of the range of recycled materials provided by the team, including drinks bottle, plastic bags, tissue paper, scrap fabric, bottle tops, pipe cleaners, string and even old Christmas decorations.

Hopefully part two should inspire event more ugly bug activity…
