Uperthorpe Peace Gardens May 14th
May’s event was linked to our ‘Outside In’ exhibition at the Upperthorpe Healthy Living Centre, it took place on a sunny but chilly morning in the Peace Garden behind the Healthy Living Centre. It was a well attended event both by volunteers and participants. We had easels set up for painting, and circus skills such as diabalo and poi for everyone to try out. Our main activity was to create a fabric wall hanging based on the park and the surrounding area, which would then be displayed at the exhibition. First we made pencil drawings of things that caught our eye in the park such as birds trees and houses amongst other things, we then turned these drawings into printing blocks by making stylized versions cut out from sheets of foam and backed with card. Everyone’s designs were printed using fabric paints onto one large canvas and incorporated to make a scene of Sheffield. We also printed using found objects from the park such as leaves to create different effects on the canvas. This truly collaborative effort was hugely successful, great fun and produced a piece of art which added greatly to our exhibition.
