November, Edward Street Flats
After a quiet start, some familiar faces returned to have another go at screen printing for the first half of the event, with t-shirts and square prints being created this time. It was nice to welcome some new participants and volunteers to this event . With all the triangle pieces sewn together, the finished balloon looked fantastic and participants really enjoyed being able to spot their designs and see how they had been transformed into a whole piece.
With much anticipation and excitement, the balloon was taken outside and filled with helium (under the careful stewardship of day-glo coat wearing volunteers) until it was inflated to an impressive size. The onlookers placed their bets on whether it would 'float or flop' and the good news is...it floated! It lifted off the ground and rose up into the sky, beyond our expectations, to a spectacular height of 30 metres- up to the level of the top flats!
The weather was just right- the winds calmed down and it stayed dry just long enough for the launch to be successful. What a relief! The balloon stayed up in the air for about 20 minutes, allowing everyone time to enjoy the stunning sight. Children enjoyed being given the chance to look after the balloon ropes and paraded the balloon through to the playground and let it rise and fall through the air. It looked really beautiful up against the sky, so colourful and unusual in the surroundings of Edward Street Flats, and we hope that it can have another launch in the future so more people can enjoy seeing it!
Thanks to everyone who was involved with making this two-part project such a success, there was loads of hard work that went into it...the planning, volunteers at Part One, at the extra printing and sewing workshops and those who came to Part Two, and to Jo Salter the artist whose innovative idea it was!
